Pursuing Holiness

Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

2 Corinthians 7:1

Purity in mind, body and spirit begins and ends with God. “Since we have these promises,” Paul writes, we ought to pursue holiness. What are the promises? Looking earlier into chapter 6…

As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

“Therefore come out from them and be separate, ; says the Lord. ; Touch no unclean thing, ; and I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, ; says the Lord Almighty.”
2 Corinthians 6:16b-18

God as my Father? I as His son? These are amazing promises! That God Almighty would live with me… amazing! These promises motivate me to get rid of everything that contaminates body and spirit.

Then it is reverence for God that compels me to do it. I perfect holiness because of who He is in my life. He is God Almighty – there is none like Him! He has made these amazing promises to me and He is able to deliver on them! So because of who He is, I actually take steps to get rid of everything that contaminates body and soul.

Holy Father, You are holy! You are completely other… there is none like You! You are perfect and holy and You call me to the same. Through Christ You make me perfect, giving me His righteousness. Now because of Your amazing promises to me and because of who You are, I pursue holiness in my everyday life. In this I will reflect Jesus and bring You glory. Only You can accomplish these things! Only You! Be glorified in and through me this day.

Whoever does His will they are Jesus brother, sister and mother. Help us Lord Jesus to have compassion and not sacrifice. You alone is Holy...and worthy. You are the Potter and we are the clay. Mold us Lord to be holy....so the world can see that there is light in You Alone...use us Lord....in Jesus Holy Name. Amen!

We indeed are to rid ourselves of spiritual and bodily contamination because of our thankfulness to God for what He has done and is doing. Let us also be careful and diligent to not rely on our own perceptions of what is a contaminant, rather on the Holy Spirit Who alone knows our impurities. For example, far too many have believed lies of demons and even zealously castrated themselves being sure that their testicles were objects of their sin. Be led by the Spirit of our God Who speaks clearly to us.
